Edward C. Darlington (Whig7) Lebanon and Lancaster Counties, 1852-1854

Early Life:

Edward C. Darlington, born May 2, 1819, West Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania; son of Doctor William and Catherine Lacey Darlington; served as a printer’s apprentice; married, Emily Franklin,1841,  (d.1850), children, Katherine Lacey Darlington Johnson, Walter Franklin Darlington, William Darlington; co-owner, evidentially owner, editor, publisher, Lancaster Examiner and Herald, 1841-1858; elected, Whig, Pennsylvania State Senator, 1852-1854; remarried, Mary Leland Hawley, 1851, children, Mary Darlington Jones, Lemuel Hawley Darlington; retired to farm, Lancaster; relocated, Williamsburg, York County, Virginia, 1861; died, March 28, 1874 (aged 54), Yorktown, York County, Virginia, interment, Cedar Grove Cemetery, Williamsburg, Williamsburg City, Virginia.

Early Career:

Printer’s apprentice with future Pennsylvania State Senator, Henry S. Evans of Lancaster as a young boy; later trained with Horace Greeley’s New Yorker magazine; evidentially appointed associate editor; co-owner, evidentially owner, editor, publisher, Lancaster Examiner and Herald, 1841-1858, selling the paper to Pennsylvania State Senator, United States Congressman John Heistand, 1858. Retired, farm, East Ward, Lancaster; relocated, Williamsburg, York County, Virginia, 1861, just months before the Civil War broke out. His several thousand acres, out buildings and house, were decimated by both armies during the war.

Elected, Whig, Pennsylvania State Senator, 7th district, Lebanon and Lancaster Counties, 1852-1854.

Legacy:

Father, William Darlington, became a botanist, studied medicine, graduated from the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania. United States Congressman, elected, Republican, Fourteenth Congress, 1815-1817; elected, Sixteenth and Seventeenth Congresses, 1819-1823.

Sister, Jane Darlington, married, Henry Sebastian Evans, Pennsylvania State Senate, 4th district, 1852-1854, 5th district, 1871-1872.
