Early Life:

George H. Rowland, born December 26, 1827, Saratoga County, New York; son of Samuel H. and Lucinda Rogers Rowland; moved to what became Rowlands, Pike County, Pennsylvania, 1828; schooled within the homes comprising the small settlement; taught school, two winter terms; partnered father, mercantile business, Kackawaxen Township, Pike County, Pennsylvania; merchant; lumberman; farmer; postmaster, United States Postal Service, Westfall, Pennsylvania, 1856-1861; elected, Democrat, Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, 1862-1863 terms, not a candidate for reelection, 1864; postmaster, United States Postal Service, Rowland, Pennsylvania, 1866-1873; elected, Democrat, Pennsylvania State Senate, 1873-1875; postmaster, United States Postal Service, Rowland, Pennsylvania,1886-1892; school director, twenty-five years; married, Catherine Ammerman, 1849, children, George Franklin Rowland, Frances C., Flora, Ada, Orville L. Established by an act of the Pennsylvania Legislature, Mount Moriah Cemetery Association of Philadelphia, incorporated, March 27, 1855, (1857 (1855) P.L. 729, No.732).

Act of February 17, 1865 (1865 P.L.172, No.163), ceded at least some portion of the Mount Moriah Cemetery to the Federal Government.

Mount Moriah Cemetery closed its gates in April 2011 and had no owner when the last member of the board of directors died. The Orphans Court of Philadelphia granted the Mount Moriah Cemetery Preservation Corporation, a receivership in 2014.
