First Lieutenant Gerrard Crane Brown, Sr., born November 12, 1842, Tower of London, England, United Kingdom; son of Benjamin Franklin and Mary Sophia Cops Brown; settled, Putnam County, New York, 1845; educated, Philips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts, 1859; entered Yale College as a member of class of1863, upon the breaking out of the rebellion he volunteered; first lieutenant, wounded, Civil War 1861; engaged, farming, Westchester County, New York, 1863-1874; engaged, farming in York County, Pennsylvania, 1874; appointed, State Grange Deputy, York County, 1876; appointed, State Grange Deputy for Adams County, 1882; elected, lecturer, Pennsylvania State Grange, December 14, 1886, and re-elected on December 13 , 1888. organized, secretary, Lower Windsor Mutual Fire Insurance Company; elected, Democrat, Pennsylvania State Senate, 1886-1894; married, Caroline Victoria Barcroft Brown, children, Evalyn Woolverton Brown, Gilbert Benjamin Brown, Gerard Crane Brown, Jr.; died July 20, 1899 (aged 56), home, Lower Windsor, York County, Pennsylvania, interment Canadochly Church Cemetery, York County, Pennsylvania.
