John Edward Kunkel, Sr., born August 16, 1862, Hempfield Township, Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania; son of Amos and Sarah Kepple Kunkel; public school education; Greensburg Seminary; read law, office of McAfee, Atkinson and Peoples, Greensburg; teacher, four years; admitted, Westmoreland County bar, 1887; married, Alice Grant Walthour, 1887, children, Cordelia Kunkle, Sara Kunkle Sheets, Katherine K. Kunkle George, Margaret Kunkle Fiscus, John Edward Kunkle, Jr., Paul Kunkle, Alice Walthour Kunkle, Louise Kunkle, Lucien Clawson Kunkle, Mary Kunkle Guthrie; school director, Greensburg, three years; director, president, Saint Paul’s Orphans’ Home, Butler, Pennsylvania; trustee, Franklin and Marshall College, 1900-1903; elected, Republican, Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, 1923-1924, not a candidate for reelection, 1924; elected, Republican, Pennsylvania State Senate, 1924-1929; died, December 20, 1929 (aged 67), in the office of the Senate, Mayo Hospital, Rochester, Olmstead County, Minnesota; interment, Union Cemetery, Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.
