John Edward Kunkel, Sr., born August 16, 1862, Hempfield Township, Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania; son of Amos and Sarah Kepple Kunkel; public school education; Greensburg Seminary; read law, office of McAfee, Atkinson and Peoples, Greensburg; teacher, four years; admitted, Westmoreland County bar, 1887; married, Alice Grant Walthour, 1887, children, Cordelia Kunkle, Sara Kunkle Sheets, Katherine K.
