Clement Humphreys, born August 5, 1744, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Province of Pennsylvania, British Colonial America; son of Joshua Humphreys Sr. and Sarah Williams Humphreys; married, Abigail Bassett, 1769; unsuccessful campaigns, Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, 1806, 1807; elected, Democratic Republican, Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, 1808; elected, Democratic-Republicans, Pennsylvania State Senate, 1809-1810; unsuccessful reelection campaign, Pennsylvania State Senate, 1810; died, March 10, 1823 (age 78), Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; internment, Friends Arch Street Meeting House Burial Ground, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

To balance the number of individuals whose terms ended in any given year, all the members elected in 1808 and due for reelection in 1812 drew lots dividing the group between 1810, 1811 and 1812. The revised dates are given in parentheses. Clement Humphreys, filling the unexpired term, 1812 drew (1810).

Legacy:

Brother, Joshua Humphreys, shipbuilder, Philadelphia, known as “Father of the American Navy." Built six frigates: Constitution, President, United States, Chesapeake, Constellation, Congress; Two ships, USS Humphreys (DD-236) and USNS Joshua Humphreys (T-AO-188), were named for him.
