Early Life:

Stephen Duncan, born 1786, Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania; son of Thomas and Martha Callendar Duncan; married, Margaret Stiles, 1811; elected, Federalist, Pennsylvania State Senate, 1821-1830; unsuccessful campaign, United States House of Representatives, 1824; married, Louisa Pollard, 1828, children, Reverend Thomas Duncan, Margaretta A. Duncan, Stephen Duncan, Mary Pollard Duncan Bradley, Eliza Lawrence Duncan, Frances Duncan Milton; moved, plantation, Bayou Teche, Saint Mary’s Parish, Louisiana; encumbered in debt from the nation’s bank panic, freed most of his slaves, mortgaged his property and moved back north, 1848; lived, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Boarding House, 1850; moved to Washington, D.C., 1853; died, April 16, 1860; interment, Oak Hill Cemetery, Washington, District of Columbia, District of Columbia.
