Reverend John Gemmill, Jr., born November 12, 1759, Carlisle, Cumberland County, Province of Pennsylvania, British Colonial America; son of John Gemmill Sr. and Elizabeth Porter Gemmill; University of Pennsylvania, AB, 1785; University of Pennsylvania, AM, 1788; ordained, Great Valley Presbyterian Church, 1791; preached, Great Valley, Chester County, 1790-1795, offered, accepted, one of the best Congregational pulpits, New England at New Haven, Connecticut; offered, Chair of Divinity, Yale College, President Dwight, declined the honor; married, Sarah Knox in Philadelphia, widow of Colonel Robert Knox, Continental Army, died one year after marriage; married, second cousin, Rebecca Irwin, 1803, children, John Gemmill, Eliza Violetta Porter Gemmill Trimble, Caroline Francis Gemmill Brinton, Amelia Sophia Gemmill Royer; elected, Democratic-Republican, Pennsylvania State Senate, 1811-1814; died, December 14, 1814 (aged 54), West Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania; interment, Saint Peter's Church in the Great Valley Cemetery, Malvern, Chester County, Pennsylvania.

Sacred to the memory of Rev. John Gemmill, who departed this life September 14, 1814. His eminent ability as a teach of the religion of Christ, his social virtues, his private worth and his superior attainments in science, are enshrined in the fond memory of his bereaved admirers. His patriotic and public service are recorded in the annals of his country.
