Biography

1797 - 1867

Of Mulberry St., Philadelphia, David S. Hassinger was born about 1797, the son of Jacob Hassinger senior.  He studied law and was accepted as a member of the Philadelphia Bar in 1819; worked as a practicing attorney at 110 Mulberry by 1824-1825; a real estate investor; and associate justice/alderman.  Named as a co-defendant with his brother Jonathan in an 1839 bankruptcy case, the indication was that the two men were early investors in the Luzerne coal fields – nevertheless, unsuccessful ones at that.  Hassinger died in May 1867, with properties on Market and Commerce Streets. Unmarried without issue, he left substantial legacies to his brother’s children.
