Biography

1843 - 1912

Charles Warren Stone was the son of Warren F. and Mary Williams Stone, born in Groton, Massachusetts on June 29, 1843; he attended Lawrence Academy at Groton and graduated from Williams College in 1863.  He moved to Pennsylvania in 1863 and settled in Warren; served as superintendent of schools of Warren County in 1865; briefly  pursued the cotton business in Mississippi; studied law; was admitted to the Warren bar in 1867 and entered private practice; he was a trustee of the Pennsylvania State College (University); served nine years on the school board (three as president); was a member of the borough council and later the State House of Representatives in 1870 and 1871; served in the state Senate, 1877-1878; was Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania, 1879-1883; was appointed Secretary of the Commonwealth on January 18, 1887, and served until his resignation to accept nomination for Congress, in which he served to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Lewis F. Watson, 1890 to March 1899.  He was an unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Pennsylvania, 1898; resumed the practice of law; and died at his home near Warren, Pa. on August 15, 1912.  Stone was interred in Oakland Cemetery, Pleasant Township, Warren County, Pennsylvania; he married Elizabeth Moorehead of Erie.
