Early Life: 

Jacob Croyle Stineman, born, April 9, 1842, Richland Township (now Adams Township), Cambria County, Pa.; son of Jacob and Mary (Croyle) Stineman, educated, public schools, teacher, public schools; sergeant, Company F, 198th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry; (1864-1865, Civil War); farmer; engaged in the coal industry; president, Stineman Coal and Coke Company; director, Citizens National Bank of Johnstown, Second National Bank, Altoona, South Fork National Bank; director, South Fork Water Company; school director, South Fork (18 years); unsuccessful campaign, sheriff, Cambria County (1885); elected, sheriff, Cambria County (1888-1890); elected, delegate, Republican State Convention (1889and 1897); elected, Republican, Pennsylvania House of Representatives, 1893-1897; not a candidate for reelection; elected, Republican, Pennsylvania State Senate (1897-1908 and 1913); married Ella Varner, 5 sons and 3 daughters; died while in office of the Senate, April 2, 1913, (71 years, 358 days) South Fork, Cambria County, Pennsylvania; interment, South Fork Cemetery, South Fork, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. Early Career:

In 1863, when General Lee invaded Pennsylvania, he enlisted the state militia serving two months. In 1864, he enlisted in Company F. 198th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and served to the end of the war, being present when Lee surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse. (i)

After the war, he pursued the bituminous coal mining business, becoming president of the Stineman Coal and Coke Company. (i)

First commander of Daniel T. Stineman Post, No. 560, of South Fork; named for his brother, served with, killed in action,  Battle of Hatcher’s Run at Dabney’s Mills, Dinwiddie County, Virginia, February 5-7, 1865. (ii)

Unsuccessful campaign, sheriff, Cambria County (1885).

Elected, sheriff, Cambria County (1888-1890).

Elected, delegate, Republican State Convention (1889 and 1897).

Elected, Republican, Pennsylvania House of Representatives, 1893-1897, not a candidate for reelection.

Legacy:

When Lieutenant Governor John M. Reynolds announced his death in the Senate he stated "That he was a man beloved and respected by all. I have known him for many years, having been associated with him both personally and in a business way and I know that in his life he has exemplified many of the noblest qualities of manhood." (iii)
