William Imlay Newell, Sr., born October 2, 1835, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; son of James and Amy Anderson Imlay Newell; attended public and private schools, studied navigation; moved to New Jersey, commander of several Philadelphia shipping companies; ship chandlery business; married, Edith Stetser Newell, 1861, children, Charles B. Newell, Elmina Corson Newell, Kate Blanche Newell, William Imlay Newell Jr.; Philadelphia School Director; elected, Republican, Pennsylvania State Senate, 1877-1882; elected, president pro tempore, 1881; wholesale oyster, food business, Philadelphia; marine insurance salesman; died, March 10, 1912 (aged 76), Pleasantville, Atlantic County, New Jersey; interment, Salem Cemetery, Pleasantville, Atlantic County, New Jersey.
