James Mathers, Sr., born January 21, 1803, Fermanagh Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania; son of Joseph and Eleanor Mathers; classical school, Reverend John Hutchison, Mifflintown, Pennsylvania; married, Jane Hutchinson Mathers, 1829 (d.1836), children, John H. Mathers, Joseph Hamilton Mathers, James Mathers; remarried, Amelia Evans Mathers, children, Margaret Ellen Mathers Atkinson, Louis E. Mathers, Orlando O. Mathers; admitted, Juniata County, bar; attorney, opened law practice of his profession, Mifflintown, able practice in the courts of Lewistown, 1827; elected, Whig, Pennsylvania State Senate, 1841-1843; died, October 5, 1850 (aged 47), Peru Mills, Juniata County, Pennsylvania; interment Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown, Juniata County, Pennsylvania.
