Early Life:

Alexander Irwin, born January 18, 1800, Penns Valley, Centre County, Pennsylvania; son of William and Margaret Johnston Irwin; common school education; moved, Curwensville, Pennsylvania, 1820,  Clearfield, Pennsylvania, 1826; engaged, mercantile business, lumberman; treasurer, Clearfield County, 1828-1830; elected, Democrat, Pennsylvania State Senate, 1835-1838; common pleas court prothonotary, 1842; Clearfield County recorder of deeds and register of wills, 1842-1844; elected, Whig, United States House of Representatives, 1847-1849; appointed, State Marshal, Pennsylvania Western District, 1850; delegate, Republican National Convention, 1872; married, Elizabeth "Betsey" Bloom, one daughter; died, March 20, 1874 (aged 74), apoplexy, Clearfield, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania; interment, Old Clearfield Cemetery, Clearfield, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania Politics:

Treasurer, Clearfield County, 1828-1830.  

Elected, Democrat, Pennsylvania State Senate, 13th district, Lycoming, Centre, Clearfield, McKean, Potter Counties, 1835-1837. Even though, had been elected, 1836 to serve the 13th District, comprised of Lycoming, Centre, Clearfield, McKean, and Potter counties, he is listed under the 23rd District in the Senate Journal for 1837-1838, rather than under the 12th District, which held the remnants of the old 13th District. This district had been dismantled in the reapportionment of 1836. 

Elected, Democrat, Pennsylvania State Senate, 23rd district, Armstrong, Cambria, Clearfield and Indiana Counties, 1837-1838.

Common pleas court prothonotary, 1842; Clearfield County recorder of deeds and register of wills, 1842-1844. 

Appointed, State Marshal, Pennsylvania Western District, 1850; resigned succeeded in office by his brother William Irvin. 

Delegate, Republican National Convention, 1872.

Continued Government Service/National Politics:

Elected, Whig, United States House of Representatives, Thirtieth Congress, 1847-1849, chose not to run for re-election. The first congressman elected from Clearfield County.
