William Garman Hertzler, born June 7, 1858, Old Port, Juniata County, Pennsylvania; son of Noah and Susanna Garman Hertzler; Airy View Academy Port Royal, Pennsylvania; Washington and Jefferson College, 1881; Yale University, 1885; studied law under Honorable Louis E. Atkinson, Mifflintown, Pennsylvania; chair, Perry County Republican Committee, 1881-1882; elected, Republican, Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, 1889-1890 term, unsuccessful campaign for reelection, 1891 term; nominated, Juniata County, Constitutional Convention, but declined to be a candidate, 1891; elected, secretary, school board, Juniata County, 1891-1900; engaged in merchandising; elected, Republican, Pennsylvania State Senate, 1897-1900; private secretary, Congressman Thad M. Mahon, 1902-1905; private secretary, Congressman Benjamin K.
