Early Life:

John B. Beck, born February 5, 1813, Shrewsberry, York County, Pennsylvania; moved to Williamsport, 1839; engaged, tailor; hardware business, 1863; Sheriff of Lycoming County, 1850-1853; elected, Democrat, Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, 1854, 1862-1863; elected, Democrat, Pennsylvania State Senate, 1868-1870; married first, Mary A. Butler, children, Samuel M Beck, Margaret Jane Beck Smith, William B. Beck, Emma Beck Embick, Henry Latimer Beck, Newton Beck, married, Josephine White, no children; died, October 25, 1890 (aged 76), Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania; interment, Williamsport Cemetery, Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.

Early Career:

Formed, partnership with his son Samuel M. engaged in the hardware business, 1865 another son Newton became a member of the firm which was known as Beck Brothers and Company. H L Beck was admitted to the firm and continued his partnership with his father until the death of the latter, October 1890.
