Doctor Miles Raymond Derk, born December 18, 1890, Kratzerville, Snyder County, Pennsylvania; son of Henry M. and Elizabeth Beaver Derk; public school education; pre-med, Susquehanna University, Selingsgrove, Pennsylvania; University of Pennsylvania, V.M.D. (Veterinary Medicine degree) 1913; veterinary practice, Jersey Shore, 1914; Burgess of Jersey Shore, 1946-1954; elected, Democrat, Pennsylvania State Senate, 1955-1958; health officer, Jersey Shore Board of Health, fifteen years; owner, automobile dealership, Derk Tractor and Equipment Company; married, Laura Nerhood, daughter, Dorothy R.; died, July 2, 1970; interment, Jersey Shore Cemetery, Jersey Shore, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.

Director, West Branch Manufacturer’s Association; president, Northern Tier Veterinary Medical Association; director, Lycoming Fair Association; Board of Directors, Jersey Shore State Bank; instrumental in merging the Community Hospital with the Sanford Private Sanatorium, forming the Jersey Shore Hospital in 1936, for which he served as president director for many years.
